
The captain of the ill-fated Indonesian fishing boat carrying 89 illegal immigrants to Australia in December last year abandoned the poorly equipped vessel the night before it crashed up on Christmas Islands' treacherous shore.
A Coronial Inquiry being held in Perth today was told the boat, Siev 221, had sustained engine failure at numerous stages of the journey, including when it lost all power before crashing into rocks at Christmas Island just before 6am on December 15, killing up to 50 passengers, including women and children.

A strong earthquake shook New Zealand on Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.
The 6.3-magnitude quake, per the USGS, shook New Zealand's South Island and its largest city of Christchurch at 12:50 p.m. local time.

The New Zealand Herald reported that the quake's epicenter was Lyttelton with a depth of 5 kilometers, though it was felt as far away as Wellington and Dunedin per Twitter reports. It shook the Canterbury region, which has a population of approximately 500,000. Radio New Zealand reports "that some people have been killed."

Christmas Island in New Zealand was reportedly not hit by any earthquake after local time 6 P.M., even as Harold Camping of the U.S.-based Christian group, Family Radio, had proclaimed that "Earthquakes would sweep across the earth, first starting in New Zealand."

However, what adds to the ongoing hoopla about the end of the world in 2011, is the 4.9 magnitude earthquake recorded 1305 kilometers (810 miles) NNE of Auckland, New Zealand in the south of Fiji Islands on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 06:31:52 PM at epicenter, the U.S. Geological Survey updated on its official site.

Macho Man Randy Savage died in a car crash in Seminole, Florida. According to celebrity gossip site TMZ, Savage's brother told them that Savage suffered a heart attack while he was driving his vehicle. The wrestler lost control of his 2009 Jeep Wrangler and crashed into a tree. Macho Man was rushed to Largo Medical center where he died later. Savage's wife was with him in the vehicle when the accident happened but she survived the crash with minor injuries.

"Macho Man" Randy Savage, the flamboyant, raspy-voiced former professional wrestler known for his bandanas, exotic sunglasses and "Ooh, yeah!" catchphrase, died Friday in a Florida car crash. He was 58.
Savage, whose legal name was Randy Mario Poffo, lost control of his Jeep Wrangler in Pinellas County on Florida's Gulf Coast around 9:25 a.m. Friday, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Savage may have suffered a "medical event" before the accident, but the report did not elaborate, authorities said.
