Police arrested more than 100 people during a night of clashes with Occupy Oakland protesters throughout the city's downtown area.

The scene finally cleared after midnight Wednesday, but police were on alert in case crowds returned.

Oakland's interim police chief, Howard Jordan, said arrests were continuing and that the total number might rise. Eight-five of those arrests were made Tuesday night, when officers raided the Occupy Oakland encampment on Frank Ogawa Plaza at City Hall, along with an annex in a park near Lake Merritt.

Jordan justified his department's use of tear gas.

"We were in a position where we had to deploy gas in order to stop the crowd and people from pelting us with bottles and rocks," he said.

Protesters had also thrown paint "and other agents" at officers, he added.

The crowd reached about 1,000 people at its peak, Jordan said, noting that police used bean bag rounds to disperse demonstrators. He said no rubber bullets were used -- a claim disputed by protesters.

Two officers were injured in the clashes, Jordan said. He said he did not know how many demonstrators may have been hurt.

In an interview with KTVU-TV Channel 2, Officer David Carman said he had been hit by paintballs and more.

"The crowd started throwing bottles, paints, beer, eggs at myself and the other officers," he said.

But some activists criticized the police tactics.

Kat Brooks, an Occupy Oakland activist and spokeswoman, said she took her young daughter home about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday because she did not want to expose her to the tear gas flooding downtown Oakland.

Protesters had marched from the plaza to Snow Park, a swatch of green near Lake Merritt, where an annex encampment was also torn down by police Wednesday morning. They had returned to City Hall when the confrontation began.

"We weren’t there but a minute before they started giving the dispersal order," Brooks said Tuesday night. "The first time they said five minutes, this time they said 'now.' They shot off the flash grenades and people scattered."

"This is the most disciplined I've ever seen Oakland be. There was no damage to property," she said.

At one point, Brooks said, several officers were hit with paintballs, but she said they had come out swinging batons.

"From the way they came into the camp [Tuesday] morning to the way they acted tonight, they have gone beyond what was necessary," she said.

Three characters stand out in this movie. Ra One (Arjun Rampal), G One (Shahrukh Khan) and young Armaan Verma who plays Prateek Subramaniam. Kareena Kapoor for once is thrown into the background, so is SRK (Shekhar Subramanium) who gets his Tamil accent off-centre. The supporting cast would be the action team and the sound engineers led by Resul Pookutty. Jeff Kleiser, heading the visual effects team has packed in as much digital technology as can be to make this a visual treat of sorts for sci-fi freaks. 

Anubhav Sinha may be credited with the direction, but if one looks closely, RA ONE has the SRK stamp. This is not to take away from Sinha, but most sequences would have been pieced together by Kleiser. I mean it's not a director's film, if you know what I mean.

SRK has used good gimmicks to get the novel idea off to a flying start. Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt and SRK as Lucifer engage in a deadly duel. It turns out, that Prateek (Armaan Verma), a sci-fi addict and computer games freak, is dreaming in the classroom. Prateek uses the code name Lucifer whenever he plays his games. His dad (Shekhar Subramanium) is an embarrassment of sorts for the 'Yo man' dude. Son feels that there should be a game where bad man wins. Father feels otherwise.

However, to impress his son, Senior Subramanium decides to create a game for him, which would also be a trump card for the company he works for. RA ONE is the bad robot, G One, the good one. Prateek is allowed to experiment with the game even before it's complete. As usual, he logs in as Lucifer and engages in a duel. Before you know it, RA ONE comes alive and is out to destroy Lucifer. Then begins the game of deadly robotic chase, which also sees G One being brought to life to annihilate the threat.

The creative director and president of J.Crew, who is currently going through a messy divorce, is credited with developing the retail behemoth's preppy-yet-offbeat aesthetic. In recent years, Lyons has become a style personality, the antidote to the Alexander McQueens and Lady Gagas of the world, known for mixing basics with the subtly quirky.

Women deeply identify with the laid-back, 6-foot-5 creative director and have increasingly been interested in the minutiae of her life. In 2008, J.Crew sought to take advantage of Lyons' appealing personality by creating "Jenna's Picks," a section in their catalogues dedicated to her favorite items.

Lyons has appeared in magazines like Glamour, InStyle and Lucky and has even been on "Oprah" in a segment filmed in her closet. Forbes magazine said that she reached "icon status comparable to the likes of superstar designers like Donna Karan and Miuccia Prada."

Lyons' family life has long been part of her story. She married artist Vincent Mazeau in 2002 in a ceremony that was covered in New York magazine.

"Vincent and I envisioned a black-tie barbecue for our wedding," Lyons said alongside photos of her in an easy, breezy wedding dress and Mazeau in a kilt.

The couple's townhouse in Park Slope has been frequently photographed, and become an object of lust for many a New Yorker. "My trick has been to approach each area like putting together an outfit," Lyons told Living Etc. "You might start with an old pair of jeans, a cashmere cardigan, or a floral belt, and work around that central fashion statement."

Earlier this year, Mazeau shot photos of Lyons and their son Beckett, 5, around the house for a J.Crew feature called "Saturday with Jenna." One of the images showed Lyons' painting her son's toes hot pink. A scandal erupted, with newscasters dissecting the image and claiming Lyons was sending confusing gender messages to her son. Jon Stewart jokingly dubbed the incident "Toemaggedon."

"I’m not surprised that [Beckett] was interested in what I was doing," Lyons told New York magazine. "My God, my toes went from white to hot pink — it was very exciting."

Originally from Palos Verdes, Calif., Lyons came to New York in 1987 to study at Parsons. In 1990, she started at J.Crew -- then a small upstart. By 2007, she had worked her way up to creative director. In 2009 she earned $750,000 and was given bonuses and benefits bringing her total pay to $4.2 million, according to reports. Last year, she was named company president.

Earlier today, Page Six reported that Lyons and Mazeau split this summer, and that divorce proceedings are getting contentious. Mazeau is seeking custody of Beckett, as well as the couple's townhouse and a large settlement, arguing that he put the breaks on his career to stay home with their son. Meanwhile, Lyons friends say she supported his career and gave him a financially comfortable life. Lyons is reportedly in love again, this time with a woman.

J.Crew would not respond to whispers of the split.

The makers of the album go for the no-holds-barred approach with the soundtrack – roping in an international star and buying the rights to a classic English song amongst other efforts – to deliver an album that bears the trademark Vishal-Shekhar peppiness. It’s a decent soundtrack but doesn’t fit the bill for a film mounted on such an extravagant scale, often falling into the trap of sounding gimmicky rather than grand.

The film’s signature track – Chammak Challo – is already a big hit. Helmed by Akon and his impressive Hindi pronunciations, the track is meant to be a sure-shot chartbuster, which it already is. Vishal-Shekhar give the song a fusion of Arabian-Western sounds, which actually become quite addictive on repeated listening. Hamsika Iyer, who brings in the unnecessary Tamil verses, also joins Akon in this track. While she sounds good, the Tamil lyrics feel odd and tend to crowd a song that is already doing a juggling act with a few other cultural influences. However, the song still works and is by far the best track in the album.

Cashing in on Akon’s participation, the album brings back ‘Chammak Challo’ in four other versions, no less. There are three remixes by Dj Khushi and Dj Amyth. The remixes – in the regular, Punjabi and Club varieties – add the obligatory club beats but don’t enhance the song much. Then there is the original, International Version, just by Akon, which is actually the best version of the song. Akon dominates with his energy and seamless Hindi, making it a foot-tapping track you actually want to play on loop.

Surprisingly, when Hindi filmmakers get legal rights to remake popular Western songs, they turn out much better than those cheap (and illegal) knockoffs we heard so many of in the past. With Dildaara – Stand By Me, Vishal-Shekhar give Ben E. King’s ‘Stand By Me’ a truly Bollywood treatment and make it work. Sung by Shafqat Amanat Ali, Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani and Clinton Cerejo’s Choir, it’s a true-blue pop ballad designed for repeat value. It’s oddly addictive and works well as the one memorable romantic track from the film.

Next up is Criminal, Akon’s second contribution to the album. Joined by Vishal Dadlani and Shruti Pathak, ‘Criminal’ combines Akon’s signature hip hop style and full-on Bollywood masala music to make another dance track. The “booty goes pop pop pop” lyrics are paired with “dhin dhanak dhin” and the result is not as enticing as ‘Chammak Challo.’ Akon’s Hindi pronunciation, once again, ends up being the most interesting thing about this song. The Criminal – Remix by Dj Amyth doesn’t add much appeal to the track.

With Bhare Naina, the soundtrack ventures into a different territory. The intentions of this track to combine classical female vocals with a western classical choir are interesting to say the least. Nandini Srikar brings in her best and the interludes by The Prague Philharmonic Choir are haunting and complement the classical vocals in a strange harmony. The simple orchestration for Srikar’s segments is effective and provides an intriguing flow with the heavier and darker choir segments. However, the rock chorus and the English verses by Vishal-Shekhar let the song down, not really working with either of the classical sides of the song, eastern or western.

The next track, Right By Your Side, veers the album into very predictable territory. Sung by Sidd Coutto, it sounds like many happy-go-lucky Vishal-Shekhar songs heard previously, and incredibly familiar to the sounds ofDostana.

Raftaarein kicks off as a theme tune track, of sorts, for the album. It’s inspired by the 70s action flicks – with a good dose of James Bond – and is sung by the composer duo themselves, who attempt the raspy, deep-throated voice of R.D.Burman. It will probably make for edgy background music for a chase sequence or as a signature song for SRK’s superhero character.

Sukhwinder Singh makes an appearance with Dadlani in Jiya Mora Ghabraaye – The Chase. It’s an experimental track with fast-paced electronica mixed with rap by Dadlani and alaap by Singh. It also reminds of the heavy electronica and hard rock soundtrack of The Matrix. The music drowns out the voices here, which is disappointing if you want to hear more of Singh. It’s a track that will have limited appeal.

The album ends with three theme tracks, that will probably have much more impact with visuals. Comes the Light, I’M On and Song of the End are all instrumental pieces and are designed to accompany action sequences as well as emotional scenes.

The soundtrack of RA.One is already popular, which comes as no surprise given the chain of publicity stunts orchestrated by the team to ensure everyone is at least aware of the film. And the showstopper track ‘Chammak Challo’ is a good hook. The album definitely goes for an international feel, but falls short of what you would expect from a film of such a huge scale. Overall, it’s an average soundtrack that might be enhanced further by how it’s used in the film.

Rangoli has always been a symbol of religious and cultural beliefs and is believed to ward off evil. But, the most important reason for decorating rangoli outside one's home, is to welcome Goddess Lakshmi.

Rangoli can be of two types - dry and wet. Dry rangoli is made with natural or chemical colors, flowers and petals. Wet rangoli is done with the help of paints.

The most common traditional rangoli designs are lotus, flowers, geometric shapes, swastiks and Oms. Rangolis have always been a part of the Hindu culture since ages and have their mark in ancient history. Free hand rangoli which was once popular in rural Gujarat, is now catching up in urban areas too. Sangeet Pradhan a housewife says, "I love to make rangolis with natural ingredients - kumkum and turmeric. I prefer making free hand rangolis as they are more innovative, and I can try different designs every day."

Rangolis are not just limited to the floor, a lot of people make rangolis on water pots and on walls as well. Divya Kochar, a management student says, "I make rangolis on water pots by using flowers and petals. I also use floating candles to give that extra festive look. I love to experiment and do various kinds of designs during Diwali."

A lot of people prefer making stencil rangolis and because it's an easier option for many. Divya Poduval, a young professional says, "I prefer stencils because for someone like me who isn't very good at drawing free hand, stencils are a big help!"

Agrees Ruhi Gupta, a student when she says, "Stencils are easy to use and I don't end up making a mess of the entire rangoli."

So this Diwali, get set for a colorful time.

(You can use different flowers for rangoli)

- First wipe the floor with a wet cloth. This will make the colors stick to the floor and prevent them from spreading.

- Draw a border with the chalk around the area where the rangoli will be made.

- Choose a base colour and spread it using a sieve. See that the colour falls within the chalk border.

- Use your fingers to make the design that you want on the base color. For example you can make flowers, peacock or different geometric designs.

- If you are happy with the design that you have made, fill it with contrasting colors to make it stand out. If not, then you can refill the design again with the same color.

- Once you've filled the design that you made with your fingers, give a border to your rangoli with black, white or any other color of your choice.

- Decorate the rangoli with glass work and flowers to give it that extra appeal.

- Finish it off by embellishing the rangoli with candles, diyas and an idol of Ganesha or Lakshmi.

Netflix (NFLX) stocks tumbled on Tuesday after news that the company had lost over 800,000 subscribers, many of whom were angered by an abortive attempt by the company to split its streaming and mail-delivery video services. 

Netflix shares plunged 35 percent Tuesday after the one-time Wall Street favorite revealed a massive departure of subscribers angered by price increases and other questionable changes at rental service that was created to make entertainment a snap.

Netflix revealed late Monday that it ended September with 23.8 million U.S. subscribers. That’s down about 800,000 from June and worse than what the company had hinted at before. In September, the company predicted it will lose about 600,000 U.S. customers.

And it may get worse. Netflix said it expects more defections in coming months.

The exodus began after the company raised its prices by as much as 60 percent in July and split up its streaming and DVD rental services. Its website was flooded by comments from angry customers. Many people also canceled service, especially on the DVD-by-mail side. The company is betting that its future is in streaming video, and CEO Reed Hastings has said he expects Netflix’s DVD subscriptions to steadily decline, much like what has happened to AOL Inc.’s dial-up Internet service.

But Netflix bungled a spin off its DVD-by-mail service, giving it the name Qwikster and creating separate accounts for people who wanted both DVDs and movie streaming. By doing so, the company created what many perceived to be a more complicated rental process at a company that began its meteoric rise with a new, easier way of searching for and finding entertainment effortlessly.

Netflix shares tumbled $41.34 to $77.50 in late morning trading Tuesday. The stock is down from more than $300 just 3 ½ months ago. The last time the stock was trading so low was in April 2010, but that was during an extraordinarily steep ascent, after the company nearly erased the omnipresent blue and yellow storefronts of Blockbuster.

After what critics said was the poor execution of the attempted split and the resulting fallout, Netflix CEO Reed Hasting was quick to try to reassure investors the core business model was strong. As Cliff Edwards explained :

Investors are trying to gauge the extent of the fallout from the price increase and aborted plan to put DVD customers on a new service called Qwikster.

“To show even modest U.S. subscriber growth in the fourth quarter will require significant ramp-up in Netflix’s marketing spending,” said Paul T. Sweeney, director of research for Bloomberg Industries.

Hastings downplayed the likelihood of a big increase in marketing efforts.

“Our streaming marketing has been very effective in the past two years,” Hastings said. “We are going to work on improving the user interface, expanding to more platforms and delivering more content. There’s no grand gestures, there’s just a lot of steady and intense efforts.”

Domestic streaming subscriptions are forecast to decline this month, level off in November and rebound in December to end at 20 million to 21.5 million, Netflix said. DVD subscriptions will fall “sharply” to 10.3 million to 11.3 million customers.

Fourth-Quarter Outlook

Fourth-quarter profit will be $19 million to $37 million, or 36 cents to 70 cents a share, on revenue of as much as $875 million, the company said. Analysts were projecting profit of $1.10 a share on sales of $919 million, according to Bloomberg data. The company earned $47.1 million, or 87 cents a share, on sales of $595.9 million, a year earlier.

Domestic subscriber growth is particularly important because Netflix has used its wide lead over U.S. rivals to finance growth in its streaming business and expand overseas.

Netflix had projected a loss of 600,000 users on Sept. 15 to end the third quarter at 24 million. The actual results were in line with the average loss of 780,000 customers seen by 10 analysts in a Bloomberg survey.

Domestic churn, a measure of subscriber turnover, jumped to 6.3 percent in the third quarter from 4.2 percent in the prior three months. The company’s total subscriber count, including service in Canada and Latin America, fell to 25.3 million from 25.6 million

As car launches go, it was neither wildly extravagant , nor unique. After all, launches are de rigueur in the run-up to the festive season, and Honda Siel's brand new baby, the 3.95-lakh Brio, was just one of four cars to hit Indian roads in the past 10 days. Yet, Brio is not just a car launch.

Brio's price was just one factor. Honda Siel, to be sure, never before aspired to be a volume player; it much preferred its association with status and luxury. (Honda has 99.9% stake in this company, the rest belongs to Siel.) But that was not all. There were significant departures from the Honda model - test drives for the media, in Vizag of all places, the focus on developing dealer network in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, the thrust on local sourcing, not just assembling . Says Seki Inaba, director (sales and marketing), Honda Siel Cars India: "We are betting on India to be the No. 1 car market in the world, ahead of China, in the future. Brio is the first step towards a shifting growth trajectory for us in India."

It is rare to see Honda on the backfoot. From the 1990s till recently, Honda's cars, led by the Honda City, commanded a premium and enjoyed long waiting lists. This enviable consumer pull was at work in the used car market too, and Honda cars commanded the best value. But over the past two years, Honda has found itself at the crossroads. Weighed down by its global woes, poor pricing strategy, which many call brand arrogance, and a lack of focus on India, the brand posted flat sales. Meanwhile , aggressive rivals such as Volkswagen and Ford have upped the ante in India.

So, the Brio is the down-but-far-from-out company's attempt to regain lost ground. For the first time, the company is trying out the aggressive pricing strategy for size and enter the volume segment of compact cars, which comprise over 60% of the Indian car market. Whether the move will pay off remains to be seen, but as Mohit Arora, executive director, JD Power and Associates , a global marketing information services firm, puts it, "This brings Honda back in the reckoning in India."

Rachel Lee, 21, a member of the “Bling Ring” pleaded no contest to the burglary charge on Friday. She is accused of breaking into reality TV star Audrina Patridge’s house, and taking $3 million worth of items from her pad. Lee is expected to be sentenced to four years in prison as part of a plea deal, according to reports.

It doesn’t look like there’s a connection with Lee’s court appearance and the premiere of the movie, but Lifetime did get a little lucky after pushing back the premiere date.

“The Bling Ring” was originally scheduled to air in August, but the network delayed the premiere so they could promote the movie for another month.

Although the movie is inspired by the true “Bling Ring” story, the names of the characters in the flick are different then the accused burglars.

The movie is centered around high school student Austin Butler, who like many kids his age is shy and wants to be liked by other students. He later meets up with Yin Chang, and the two start stealing from rich celebrities. Other friends decide to join in on the fun of robbing celebrities of millions of dollars worth of clothes and jewelry.

The real ring was arrested in 2009 and was accused of burglaries at homes of big time celebs like Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom, Paris Hilton, Rachel Bilson, Brian Austin-Green and Megan Fox, and Ashley Tisdale.

They allegedly scoured the Internet, and used sites like TMZ and Twitter to find out where the celebrities lived, and to learn when they would be away from their homes.

The four other accused members of the ring—Nicholas Prugo, Courtney Leigh Ames, Diana Tamayo and Roy Lopez, Jr.—are scheduled to return to court in November for motions, the Los Angeles Times reported. They all have pleaded not guilty.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White is expected to play against the Seattle Seahawks. White has been dealing with a quad injury all week and is listed as questionable on the injury report. Despite the questionable tag, there doesn't seem to be any concerns with White's availability. Last season White was listed as questionable for every single game, but played in all 16.

On the season White has 20 receptions for 224 yards and a touchdown, including 9 catches for 140 yards last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. White should fare well against a Seahawks defense that's struggled all around. The Falcons will also be looking to bounce back from a tough loss against the Buccaneers. If White for some reason cannot go, look for rookie Julio Jones to build on his break out game last week and Harry Douglas to get some increased targets.
