KATHMANDU: When the fifth edition of Bigg Boss opens on Color Television at 8.15 pm Nepal time, one of the contestants will have unusual fans rooting for her - prisoners and policemen posted in Kathmandu's Central Jail.

The jail is agog with the news that the wife of their star prisoner, Charles Sobhraj, will be taking part in the reality show and today evening, TV sets are going to be switched on in the cells. This viewership will not only be Nihita Biswas Sobhraj's USP but also something that is bound to push up the show's rating, especially with Sobhraj himself watching the show and maybe in future even offering his criticism.

"I am cool about it," Sobhraj tells TNN as the prison looks like a carnival with relatives queuing up in serpentine lines to meet prisoners with food and gifts on the fifth day of Nepal's biggest festival Dashain. "I think she will conduct herself well," adds Sobhraj.

He will watch the show on his tiny TV set inside his cell, thankful to a protracted monsoon that has temporarily banished Nepal's long spells of power outage. He was not able to wish her good luck when she left for the show due to several problems. Initially, it was a deputy police superintendent who posed problems, objecting to Nihita's visits. Then her BA exams happened and she was at home studying.

Sobhraj is unperturbed that the limelight, money and contacts Bigg Boss will bring to Nihita will go to her head and make her wonder what she was doing with him. "I am not afraid of Salman Khan," he says laughingly, dismissing the question whether Nihita, a Salman fan, might not fall in love with the Bollywood superstar, who is also co-hosting the show with Sanjay Dutt.

He has already started planning out Nihita's future career, which is far from the world of glamour and showbiz. Nihita, who studied journalism in high school, abandoned that and took up political science in college following his advice. After she passes out, he plans to make her study law in London since it will be a three-year course whereas in France, where he had been living, law means five years of swotting.

Bhushan Timsinha (whose name has been changed on his request) is a prisoner doing time along with Sobhraj in the Central jail and assigned by the authorities to the designation of "naike" for good behaviour. It means he is entrusted with certain responsibilities, like keeping an eye of some prisoners, especially Charles.

Timsinha is present during the conversation with Charles, smiling incessantly and enjoying the talk about Bigg Boss. He too knows about it and has even met Nihita in person. And yes, he is also going to watch the show on Sunday night.

Nihita's family is also excited about the debut. The earthquake that shook Nepal and India last month led to the disruption of power lines in Nihita's neighbourhood, leaving them without electricity for days.

"But the line has been restored yesterday," says her mother Shakuntala Thapa, who is also Sobhraj's lawyer. "And we have also had a new cable connexion installed so that we get Colors."

Bigg Boss has been a boon for a local cable provider that in the past roped in Bollywood iconManisha Koirala to advertise for their DishHome cable TV services. On Sunday, they proudly announced the inclusion of Colors among the channels they are authorised to distribute, focusing on Bigg Boss.

There's only one disgruntled soul who would have preferred Nihita to have rejected the offer and stayed at home. That's her little kitten Kimchi, whom she reared up lovingly after it was born immature and all its other siblings died. "She's been searching all over the house for Nihita," Thapa said. "And she's quiet disconsolate."
